Orthodontic FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best age to visit the orthodontist?

The great news is that any age is a great age to start thinking about your smile! The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic visit around age seven. But orthodontics isn't just for kids and teens - about 1 in 5 patients is over the age of 21! Whether it's for yourself or for a child, anytime is a good time to see the orthodontist.

Do braces hurt?

Braces don't usually hurt! You may feel a little soreness for a couple days as your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth get used to your new braces, but it's totally normal and temporary.

Do I need to brush my teeth more often with braces? How can I care for my teeth and retainers?

Yes! Keeping your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy is extra important with braces. Here's how to make it easy:

  • Brush at least 3 times a day and floss daily. Your orthodontist will show you the best techniques for cleaning around your braces.
  • Always brush after meals to remove food trapped in your braces.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste, and ask your dentist or orthodontist if you need a fluoride rinse to help prevent cavities.
  • If you remove your retainer to eat, brush and floss first, and always keep your retainer safe in its case.
  • Keep your retainer clean by gently brushing it or soaking it as instructed — never use boiling water or the dishwasher.
  • During your treatment, try to avoid foods with a lot of sugar, which increases the amount of bacteria that grows in your mouth, causing more plaque and possibly cavities.
  • Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that could damage your braces, like caramel, gum, gummy candies, nuts, ice, corn on the cob, and ribs.
  • Continue visiting your family dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups.

Do I still need dental checkups with braces?

Absolutely! In fact, it's even more important to see your dentist regularly while wearing braces. Food can get caught in hard to reach spots, which can lead to cavities, gingivitis, or gum disease. Your dentist and orthodontist will work together to keep your teeth clean and healthy.

Will braces interfere with school activities like sports, playing an instrument, or singing?

Not at all! You can still play your favorite instrument, sing, or participate in sports. Just a few adjustments may be needed at first. If you play a contact sport, it's a good idea to wear a mouthguard to protect your braces.
