Orthodontic Emergencies: What to Do

Don't worry—true orthodontic emergencies are very rare! But if you ever find yourself in pain or with a problem you can't fix on your own, we're here for you. Give us a call so we can schedule a time to get you comfortable and back on track.

You may be surprised to learn that many little issues can be handled at home until you can come see us. Here are some quick tips to keep you smiling:

Quick Fixes You Can Try at Home

  • Poking braces or wires: Cover the spot with a small piece of orthodontic wax (we'll give you some!) to keep things comfy.
  • Wire slipped out: Gently guide it back, or if you can't, just cover the end with wax until we see you.

General Soreness

It's normal to feel some soreness when you first get your braces. Your teeth may feel tender for 3-5 days. Here's what helps:

  • Stick to soft foods until chewing feels better.
  • Rinse with warm salt water (1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water).
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers (like acetaminophen) if you need it.
  • Use wax on your braces to protect lips, cheeks, and tongue while they adjust.

Other Common Issues

Headgear Discomfort

This usually happens if it's not being worn as instructed. Follow your orthodontist's directions. The more you wear it, the less it hurts!

Loose Appliance

Pop some wax on the bothersome area until you see us.

Loose bracket

If it's still on the wire, leave it there and cover with wax for comfort. If it comes off easily, we'll put on a new bracket when we see you.

Loose Wire

Try to tuck it back into place. If it still bothers you, cover the bothersome area with wax until we can clip the wire for you.

Poking Wire

Gently push it down with the eraser end of a pencil or cover it with wax.

Remember

Even if you've made yourself comfortable at home, it's super important to still call our office to let us know what happened. Leaving braces or appliances damaged for too long can slow down your treatment.
